The Kosovo Crisis, NATO

Going into Tirana, Albania's capital in an old Russian jet from the Albanians Airlines was an unforgettable experience. The mountains that surrounds Tirana are high, impressive and beautiful. Old Albanian defense forces bunkers are scattered everywhere and give the impression of mushrooms from the air. I arrived in one of the smallest and poorest airport in Europe. Soon afterwards, NATO arrived in full force. First, the United States Air Force sized command and control of the airport. From that moment on the air traffic went on around the clock. Loads of humanitarian relief supplies began to arrive, followed by military hardware and soldiers. The U.S. Army elite 82nd Airborne troops made their presence as well as various Navy and Marines units. The French Paras, the Dutch Marine Commandoes as well as the Austrian army personnel made their presence. The cold weather and rain made matters a bit difficult, but soon a large scale humanitarian relief operation was on it's way. Finally, the U.S. Army, Apache helicopters (a tank buster combat helicopter) and the long distance multiple rocket launcher vehicles came in support of the allied air strikes in Kosovo. Operation Allied Force had begun.
