The Kosovo Crisis, Refugees

Refugees will arrive from Kosovo with few possessions, without documents and sometimes physically beaten. Children will sometimes end up separated from their parents. It was reported that Serbians will sometimes beat civilians and rape woman. The lucky ones that were allow to drive up with their own vehicle had their license plates and other documents confiscated. Life in the refuge camps like the one here in Kukes, Albania, was extremely difficult. People had to sleep either in the open, on their own vehicles or in makeshift tents. Eventually, the various humanitarian organizations with the help of NATO, were able to bring in the much needed supplies as tents, food and medicines. The environment in this high mountains region was hostile.  The cold and rain made the living difficult and the daily arrival of refugees, soon overwhelm the small town. People were offered to be transported to various camps in Albania But most people rejected. They choose to stay in Kukes, they were close to Kosovo. They wanted to stay close to their home.
